About Us Intxauspe, our Rural House

Intxauspe Landetxea is a traditional Basque farmhouse dating back to the 17th century which was renovated in 2005 to be converted into a Casa Rural which is 10 km from the beach and in the heart of the Markina landscape. It is on the sides of the Santa Eufemia mountain, 5 minutes walk from the centre of Markina which is a medieval town with 4500 inhabitants which has preserved a rich heritage of monuments.

There are various palaces and towers in the old quarter and on the outskirts: Murga Palace, Antxia Tower, Ansotegi Tower, the Town Hall, Mugartegi Palace, Andonegi Palace, Barroeta Tower, Ugarte Tower, Arretxinaga Chapel. The Casa Rural is 5 km from the municipality of Bolívar which is home to the Simón Bolívar museum. This museum depicts the atmosphere of the life of the people of Biscay during the middle ages, as well as the personal and political background of Simón Bolívar "The Libertator".

As far as sport is concerned throughout history it has always played a leading role in the life of the people of Markina. It is worth highlighting rural sports and ball games as the disciplines for which our village is most renowned. The municipal fronton court, popularly known as the University of the Ball has, over the years, been the setting for exhibiting great ball mastery by many of Markina’s locals. During the summer months there are games of jai alai with the top players who are currently practising this sport.

We must not overlook the rich and varied cuisine in the area which is based on the freshest seasonal products both from the soil and the sea. "Idiazabal" cheese is particularly noteworthy and is made using milk from the autochthonous "Latxa" sheep species produced by the shepherds in Markina and txakoli wine from Biscay. The latter has a characteristic acidic flavour and, according to many experts, is the perfect accompaniment for fish. Both the production of cheese and txakoli takes place 300 metres from Intxauspe.

For mountain lovers we can offer Santa Eufemia, with impressive views from the chapel, as well as the mountain of Kalamua and Oiz. There are also various walking routes.
